All there is to Know about Alternative Therapies for Labor

Filed under: alternative therapy — admin @ 6:28 am
Women have been having babies every since humans have roamed the earth. However, with the centuries of medicine and technology improving it has become very common for women to seek pain management for labor through drug therapy. Although epidurals are an excellent way for women to go through labor with as little pain as possible, there are still women who wish to experience the whole labor and not be frozen from the lower back down.

This is why many women research, learn about, and obtain alternative therapies for labor. Child birth can be a very special and overwhelming occasion and many women wish to experience it to the fullest extent. For those women, there are plenty of alternative therapies for labor available. Women should have a child birth plan that their physician and or mid-wife have agreed to. This way any alternative therapies for labor can be pre-arranged and accessible when the big day comes.

One of the most common alternative therapies for labor is of course Lamaze. Lamaze is a breathing routine that is usually practiced in classes prior to the day of birth. It is typically a class taken not only by the expectant mother, but also by a partner known as a coach. Breathing properly allows for relaxation as well as a different place to focus during painful contractions. An ancient technique that has been catching on in the United States is most definitely acupuncture. It has been proven that by placing needles in specific places in the body that then triggers endorphins in the brain that block the pain signals. However, in order for this to be a useful tool for labor, the woman obviously has to be okay with needles and it will also need to be pre-arranged so that the certified acupuncturist can be there when they are needed.

There is also a similar technique called acupressure or shiatsu. This works basically the same way but instead of needles there is finger or thumb pressure in specific locations. Another one of the very common alternative therapies for labor is hydrotherapy. Most often women will sit or lay down in a Jacuzzi tub. This is a combination of both heat and massage. However, the tubs are typically designed in a specific way to prevent water from being forced in the vagina. The great thing about using hydrotherapy is that tubs are found in most hospitals and birthing centers and having the baby actually in the water is supposed to be one of the most soothing methods of natural child birth. Each woman must decide on a birthing plan that is best suited for her, but alternative therapies for labor are great options.

What Do I Look For In Alternative Therapies For Arthritis?

Filed under: alternative therapy — admin @ 3:51 pm
Of all the medical conditions that exist, arthritis is the one that is most often treated with alternative types of therapies. That is because it is a chronic condition for which there is no cure yet. In addition, people with arthritis are in pain and therefore need relief. And, quite frankly, there is mistrust and fear when it comes to conventional treatments, particularly pharmaceuticals.

Yet, it is a mistake to assume that because a remedy is touted as being “natural” or “organic” or “an alternative to harmful drugs” that it is necessarily safe and effective.

There are certain items that should be looked for in any type of alternative or complementary therapy. (The terms “alternative” and “complementary” can be used interchangeably. An alternative therapy, when used in combination with conventional therapies is referred to as a complementary therapy.) Therapies that fall under this label are acupuncture, herbs, vitamins, massage, music therapy, etc.

First of all, look for the “warning signs”. These are tip-offs that the treatment being touted may be bogus.

1. If the seller of the product accuses the medical community of a conspiracy, watch out! This is a favorite tactic of unscrupulous vendors.

2. If solid evidence is lacking. Testimonials alone should not be relied upon because it is easy to fake them.

3. If a remedy is touted as being effective for a wide range of medical problems, be very wary. Nothing works for every disease.

4. A treatment referred to as a “miracle cure” or “new discovery” or “discovery suppressed by the medical establishment” should be viewed with skepticism.

5. Jargon words such as “detoxify” or “purify” or “oxidize” should also raise red flags. These words sound impressive but unless there is scientific proof, it is probably a lot of hocus-pocus.

Check to see if the treatment is supported by well-designed clinical trials. With arthritis, the placebo response (response to a sugar pill) can be as high as 40 per cent! Therefore, it is critical to see if the treatment has been tested extensively against placebo.

If an alternative health provider is soliciting your business, make sure you look into their qualifications and credentials. National organizations should offer a means of checking to see if the person you’re planning to see is certified. A note of caution… just because a provider lists an impressive sounding organization doesn’t mean it is a valid one. Beware of this and look into their reputation. You can also check your state government listings for agencies that regulate and license health care providers. These agencies may list practitioners in your area and offer a way to check credentials.

Many arthritis sufferers take herbal remedies as well as vitamins and minerals. These nutritional supplements don’t have to undergo the same rigorous testing and labeling process as over-the-counter and prescription medications. Some of these substances, including products claimed as “natural,” have drug-like effects that can be potentially dangerous. Some supplements can cause problems during surgery such as changes in heart rate or blood pressure or increased bleeding. Others may have significant interactions with prescription drugs. Make sure you let your physician know about any nutritional supplements you are taking.

Many people with arthritis use the Internet for their medical information. While the ‘net is a great place to get good information, it is also a prime source of misinformation. Beware of sites that muddy the distinction between good information and a “hard sell.” of products. Make sure you know the credentials of the person making the claims.

When arthritis patients ask me about why some questionable alternative therapies seem to work, I often to refer to the wisdom of Joe Schwarcz. [Joe Schwarcz is director of McGill University's Office for Science and Society (www.OSS.McGill.ca)].

He writes, “If there is no efficacy in these alternative treatments, why do people flock to them? Because alternative practitioners are charismatic and often offer hope where mainstream medicine cannot. They use the placebo effect to great advantage and capitalize on the fact that many diseases are self-limiting and resolve by themselves. But when contemplating a course of treatment, it is prudent to reflect upon the words of Victor Herbert, renowned hematologist and champion of evidence-based medicine: “for every complex problem there is a simple solution, and it is always wrong.”

Het leidt tot de alvleesklier deficiëntie met gewichtsverlies en het produceren van volumineus, vettig, smerig ruikende ontlasting met de olie-druppels. Alternative Medicine

Filed under: alternative therapy — admin @ 1:41 am
Basic Principles of Complementary/ Alternative Therapies

JUST AS MAINSTREAM MEDICINE has a fairly consistent approach to illness, so does al-ternative medicine. Most prevalent in alternative medicine are the six naturopathic principles. In one form or another, these principles are revisited again and again throughout Section Two of this text. The following principles are described by Dr. Catherine Downey and excerpted from her chapter on naturopathic medicine.

1. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatix naturae)

The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain and restore health. The healing process is ordered and intelligent: nature heals through the response of the life force. The physician’s role is to facilitate and augment this process, to act to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery, and to support the creation of a healthy internal and external environment. In short, give the body the appropriate tools and it will heal itself.

2. Treat the Whole Person (The multifactorial nature of health and disease)

Health and disease are conditions of the whole organism, involving a complex interaction of physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social factors. The physician must treat the whole person by taking all of these factors into account. The harmonious functioning of all aspects of the individual is essential to recovery from and prevention of disease and requires a personalized and comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

3. First Do No Harm (Primum no nocere)

Illness is a purposeful process of the organism. The process of healing includes the generation of symptoms, which are, in fact, an expression of the life force attempting to heal itself. Therapeutic actions should be complementary to and synergistic with this healing process. The physician’s actions can support or antagonize the actions of the vis mediatrix naturae; therefore methods designed to suppress symptoms without removing underlying causes are considered harmful and are avoided or minimized. Therapeutic actions are applied in an ordered fashion congruent with the internal order of the organism.

4. Identify and Treat the Cause (Tolle causam)

Illness does not occur without cause. Underlying causes of disease must be discovered and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from illness. Symptoms are expressions of the body’s attempt to heal, but they are not the cause of disease; therefore naturopathic medicine addresses itself promptly to the underlying causes of disease, rather than symptoms. Causes may occur on many levels, including physical, mental-emotional, and spiritual. The physician must evaluate fundamental underlying causes on all levels, directing treatment at root cause rather than at symptomatic expression.

5. Prevention (Prevention is the best “cure”)

The ultimate goal of naturopathic medicine is prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of lifestyle habits that create good health. The physician assesses risk factors and hereditary susceptibility to disease and makes appropriate interventions to avoid further harm and risk to the patient. The emphasis is on building health rather than on fighting disease. Because it is difficult to be healthy in an unhealthy world, it is the responsibility of both the physician and patient to create a healthier environment in which to live.

6. The Physician as Teacher (Docere)

Beyond an accurate diagnosis and appropriate prescription, the physician must work to create a health-sensitive, interpersonal relationship with the patient. A cooperative doctor-patient relationship has inherent therapeutic value. The physician’s major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for health. The physician is a catalyst for healthful change, empowering and motivating the patient to assume responsibility. It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately creates or accomplishes healing. The physician must strive to inspire hope as well as understanding. Physicans must also make a commitment to their personal and spiritual development in order to be good teachers.

Finding Alternative Therapy Resources

Filed under: alternative therapy — admin @ 5:28 am
Laurie Raphael asked:

Interest in alternative therapy is growing by leaps and bounds. Although it is not as common as standard medicine, it can definitely work for many. If you are looking for information on alternative therapy, there are lots of resources available and many ways you can find help regarding alternative health.

Getting started with alternative therapy is a process in its own right. Remember, you are taking a risk when you start to use alternative therapy as opposed to a more practiced form of care. But even then, you need to remember that alternative therapy often times works better for some people than the more standard practices that have been used for many years. To get started, you first need to determine what type of alternative therapy is available for the illness you are attempting to treat.

If you are like most people, you probably begin your research online. From there, you can visit a doctor that specializes in alternative therapy. This will help you to get a complete overview of what is available as well as what you should move forward with.

There are many ways that you can find help regarding alternative therapy. If you are interested in alternative therapy, you should consider the many resources that are available. Although you may not find as many resources on alternative health as standard medicine, there are still plenty out there for you to look into.

1. When it comes to finding information on alternative therapy it does not get much better than the internet. There are many websites maintained by alternative health doctors, people who practice alternative health, etc. Although much of what you read on the internet may not always be true. But with that being said, you should be able to find plenty of information concerning alternative therapy online.

2. As of late, more and more books on alternative health have been published. By purchasing one of these you will get top notch information about this way of life. A good thing about many books on alternative medicine is that they are usually written by someone with knowledge in their chosen subject. This means that you will get top notch information.

3. You will find many therapists who practice alternative therapy. Of course, you are not going to find these doctors at your local hospital, so you may have to search around a bit. The best place to search for an alternative health doctor is in the local phone book. You may be surprised to find that there are many of these professionals in your area.

Once you find several of them all you have to do is choose the right one.

Listed above are three places to find information on alternative therapy. You may be able to think of other resources too. You certainly should consider using them to find information that you want. It does not matter where you find information on alternative therapy as long as it is accurate and reliable.

The actual step of starting alternative therapy can be the most difficult. This is when you have to decide whether or not you are going to move forward with the treatment process. If you do your research you will know what you should do.

All in all, getting started with alternative therapy may take some time if you are going to research every last detail.

The Rise of Alternative Therapy

Filed under: alternative therapy — admin @ 11:18 am
Will Edwards asked:

There is no doubt about it, we have all become much more aware of health in recent years. We have become less likely to trust what he says the medical profession, the most suspicious of the food manufacturers say about the food it distributes, and generally more inclined to the received wisdom about health issues.

This has been accompanied by an increased interest in alternative therapies and treatments that seems to be growing in popularity. The situation seems to reveal a general trend, at least in the West, so what exactly is happening? Why have we lost the trust and which to keep everything? Good questions - but let's start first a look back.

treatments such as medicinal plants, home-made ointments, tinctures, compresses and all applications were much more common a few generations ago. Our immediate ancestors, ie parents and grandparents, gradually replaced their faith in such remedies and cures with his faith in the pills that are so easily prescribed for all kinds of ailments in recent days.

You name the disease, and almost certainly there is a pill that can get that are supposed to help you get rid of it. However, the trend described above is a trend away from that faith in such chemical solutions and back to our very recent ancestors rejected. The reason seems to be a lack of conviction in the minds of many people that the answer to their problems can be found in pills.

The prescription pill is usually directed at the symptoms rather than underlying causes. Pain relief, for example, that can be achieved by taking the pills is very common response of the medical profession, but to find why there is pain in the first place and help in achieving a permanent solution. Have back pain as an example. Go to the doctor with back pain and your pain. Go to a doctor and holistic face poor sitting posture.

Of course, the medical profession should be concerned about pain. Should prescribe painkillers, but should not stop there. We need doctors who are willing to investigate the root causes and solve problems permanently, instead of just providing temporary quick fix solutions - which is what the pain, are murderers.

So perhaps the answer lies in the medical profession in an effort to come back a bit, to its roots, which covers alternative treatments that are useful in thinking much more comprehensively and make a commitment to issue fewer pills as a reaction to almost everything. If this happens, the only loser would be the pharmaceutical companies.
